Hymyilevä Oulu 26

Smiling Oulu 26 is a year-long photography initiative by the
Augmenters Cultural Association, part of the official
Oulu 2026 European Capital of Culture programme in Finland.

The project gives voice to those often unseen — minorities, people experiencing loneliness, and individuals who feel different — using photography as a tool for empathy, visibility, and human connection. Through portraits and shared stories, it invites communities to reflect on belonging and the power of being truly seen.

We are organising Oulu’s largest photography competition, open to all, alongside free and inclusive workshops from January to March 2026 that encourage participants to explore photography as a means of expression and social dialogue.

The project culminates in a celebration gala on June 10, 2026, at Pohjankartano, where winners will be announced and a central exhibition launched — one that will later expand to multiple venues across Oulu.

The town of Riogordo in southern Spain also takes part, hosting its own local competition and exhibition in collaboration with the Museo Etnográfico and the Ayuntamiento de Riogordo, fostering intercultural exchange and shared storytelling across borders.
